Demerol

What is Demerol?

Demerol®, generically known as meperidine, is a quite powerful, short-acting and rapid-onset synthetic opiate normally prescribed to manage moderate to severe pain. This drug acts to relieve pain by binding to receptors in the brain to decrease the feeling of pain and reduce the emotional response to pain.

Is Demerol addicting?

Demerol® is a highly addictive substance and may be habit forming. Within a few weeks of consistently taking Demerol®, the body adjusts to the presence of the drug and a tolerance develops. As a tolerance to Demerol® develops, the body requires more and more Demerol® to achieve pain relief. Taking higher doses of Demerol® can increase the risk of experiencing uncomfortable side effects.

While the health consequences of developing a Demerol® addiction are serious and potentially life threatening, the social consequences of the drug are equally disturbing.

Warning Signs of Demerol Addiction

  • Extreme drug seeking behaviors
  • Financial Problems
  • Appearance of withdrawal symptoms

Demerol® withdrawals are extremely uncomfortable and can start as soon as a few hours after the last dose. Without medical supervision, decreasing a dose or stopping Demerol® intake altogether may cause these initial symptoms.
