Fentanyl

What is Fentanyl?

Fentanyl® is a quite powerful, short-acting and rapid-onset synthetic opiate normally prescribed to manage moderate to severe pain. It is available in a number of different forms: Actiq, Sublimazine, Fentanyl®, Fentanyl® Lollipop, and Fentora. This drug acts to relieve pain by binding to receptors in the brain to decrease the feeling of pain and reduce the emotional response to pain

Is Fentanyl addicting?

Fentanyl® is a highly addictive substance and may be habit forming. Fentanyl is often prescribed when other opioid narcotic pain killers fail to relieve pain. Since Fentanyl is usually prescribed after another opiate pain reliever, physical dependency will follow. Physical dependence also involves withdrawal, which can lead to the uncomfortable physical symptoms when the medication is decreased or stopped.

Warning Signs of Fentanyl Addiction

  • Extreme drug seeking behaviors
  • Appearance of withdrawal symptoms

Fentanyl withdrawals are extremely uncomfortable and can start as soon as a few hours after the last dose. Without medical supervision, decreasing a dose or stopping Fentanyl intake altogether may cause these initial symptoms.
