Lortab

What is Lortab?

Lortab , generically termed hydrocodone/APAP, is a combination of hydrocodone, an opioid pain reliever, and acetaminophen, a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of the hydrocodone. Lortab® is prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain. Lortab® relieves pain by depressing the central nervous system. Lortab® is typically prescribed for short term pain due to an injury, surgery or a dental procedure but is also sometimes used to suppress dry, chronic coughing.

Why is Lortab addicting?

Lortab® is a highly addictive substance and may be habit forming. Within a few weeks of consistently taking Lortab®, the body adjusts to the presence of the drug and a tolerance develops. As a tolerance to Lortab® develops, the body requires more and more Lortab® to achieve pain relief. Taking higher doses of Lortab® can increase the risk of experiencing uncomfortable side effects.

Lortab® is a very powerful drug that the body may become physically dependent upon. If a person no longer wishes to continue taking Lortab® or wants to discontinue taking the drug due to its side effects, medical supervision is necessary to prevent withdrawal symptoms.
