Oxycodone

What is Oxycodone?

Oxycodone is a semi-synthetic pain reliever derived from opium. Oxycodone is prescribed to treat moderate to moderately severe acute pain. Oxycodone relieves pain by binding to the opiate receptors in the brain to depress the central nervous system.

Is Oxycodone addicting?

Oxycodone is a highly addictive substance and may be habit forming.  Within a few weeks of consistently taking Oxycodone, the body adjusts to the presence of the drug and a tolerance develops.  As a Oxy addiction develops, the body requires more and more Oxycodone to achieve pain relief.  Taking higher doses of Oxycodone can increase the risk of experiencing uncomfortable side effects.

If a person no longer wishes to continue taking Oxycodone or wants to discontinue taking the drug due to its side effects, medical supervision is necessary to prevent withdrawal symptoms.
